Something's Gotta Give
I've been realizing more and more lately about the importance of utilizing your time. Now that I'm working 30+ hr work weeks on top of school and karate, it's been quite a compromise between all the things I want to get done versus what actually gets done.
The usual answer to a problem like this would be to try and jam as much as I can into the small windows of time I have. But I've learned from experience that it's become a less and less reasonable option of doing that.
What I conclude is that because time is limited and more time can't be manufactured, I have to prioritize the things that I want to accomplish with what free time I do have. I remember back in Grant MacEwan I had an Econ professor (Dr. Manoucherie). After we got back our disastrous midterm that our class had written (with a class average of 43%), he suggested that it was because of our lack of time management for the cause of our horrible marks. His suggestion for a practical step was to plot out a time graph of how many hours you have in an entire week and figure out how many hours you commit to doing different things versus studying Econ.
Now although this was a futile and unreasonable attempt by him at trying to deflect blame for crappy marks (to our lack of time commitment) from the real reason of failing (his unreasonable expectation of us to know intricate Econ details for a 200 lvl course), I still find the exercise practical in other ways. Stupid prof and his Ph D in Econ...... Anyways, I've decided to make a list of things that I'd like to do versus a list of things that I actually do:
Things I want to do:
- Get at least 7 hours of sleep per night
- Practice guitar for at least half an hour a day
- Workout at least twice a week if not three times a week
- Work on my group assignments
- Play Call of Duty with my friends
- Start writing rough drafts of scripts from my script ideas
- Start shooting video ideas with Vic
- Possibly take oversee some drama related issues with Gateway
- Have at least an hour a week to clean up the house
- Update my Ipod with Videos and New Music
- Watch some movies that I rent
- Practice breakdance
- Blog at least once a week
Things I actually do:
- Practice guiar for half an hour each week
- Play Call of Duty more than I should
- Update my Ipod
- Watch movies I rent
- Blog once every 2-3 weeks
- Get about 7 hours of sleep per night
- Play more Dynasty Warriors than I should
- Workout once a month
- Piss around on the internet for at least 2 hours a night
It's become obvious to me that my want list is way bigger and demands more time than I probably have in a week. But this really does serve for a good illustration as to what things I can deem as important and need to be done versus the optional things that I do.
