Pick of the Litter (Operation Too Much Time on My Hands)

Superbowl Weekend is officially over. I'll keep it short and simple by just saying that the game was a really entertaining one.

But I think the real thing about Superbowl that brings people together is the one-time only exclusively aired commercials. Unfortunately, from where I was watching the game, it seemed like the special commercials were blacked out for the most part. I'll assume that a majority of Canadians weren't able to catch the commercials, seeing as we had no luck looking through a huge list of satelite channels.

This is where I come in.

I took the liberty and time to watch all of the posted Superbowl commercials. That means I went through all the gems, and all the crap. The main reason why I did this, is so that I could prevent the pain of disappointment being felt by anyone else forced to sift through all the crap just to find the rare gems. You can thank me later. Nay, you BETTER thank me later! (you can see the entire 60 commercials I went through to make this blog yourself, however I highly don't recommend it)

After 2 hours of work: one hour being watching all these damned commercials, and the other hour being spent on linking these damned videos, I'm finally done. My general impression of the commercials was that there was definitely a lot of crap out there. I think Superbowl commercials have gone downhill with time maybe because writers are trying too hard to be hip and different. Anyway, luckily for us, the good news is that it seems like a bigger variety of companies are utilizing the Superbowl for advertising. This means more commercials and therefore a better chance of everything NOT sucking.

With that said, here's my pick for the top 14 commercials. I want you to keep in mind that this year wasn't too impressive, meaning that not all of these will be 'knee-slapping' hilarious, but instead that they have some amusing content. Also, I'm not great at ranking things, so I'm just gonna make a general list of 14 noteworthy ones:

(Last note: Try to watch the commercials without looking at the description or title. I found that it helps to not know anything about the commercial before you watch it, just like how it'd be if it were on TV. Oh and the list is 14 because I couldn't decide which of these commercials wouldn't fit in the original list of 10 I wanted. I told you I was bad with ranking.)

Some comments about the other commercials

I don't want to go into too much detail again mainly because it would take too long to write out. I will point out a few things about some commercials that didn't make the list though. (If you've really got a lot of time to kill, you can watch these. At least this way, we'll be able to refer back to them next time (thumbs up, Soldier........?)

Most Surprising Commercial:
Hyundai: They didn't really go for a humorous factor which was kinda refreshing. However, the way the narrator talks to down to earth and the 'surprising twist' that they present in the commercial shocked me a bit. Good and definitely memorable.

Lamest Commercials #1 , #2
Salesgenie: I'm usually game for any kind of racial based humor as long as it's done in good taste. The thing is what turned me off about these commercials isn't that they were done distastefully, but just that they weren't funny. There was no real comedy or point in the commercial, and at the same time they rely on the racial humor to try and save the botched commercial. I'm pretty surprised they decided to waste their money on advertising space during the Superbowl for these lame ones.
Doritos Singer Commercial: Cool idea for sure. The problem is that they picked a blah artist. I admit, the tune is kinda catchy, but it's definitely not at Superbowl level. And the commercial is SO long too!
Go-Daddy.com: This commercial obviously tries to get you off the couch and onto their website. How they go about doing this is by offering an 'exposure' video of some apparently well-known model. Can't quite say it motivated me enough to goto their site, seeing as firstly I see through their brutal pop-up like attempt to entice me. And secondly I think there's far better/worthwhile things to see once I log onto the Internet than some corporate barely soft-core porn they're trying to pitch to me. And that's pretty sad that they failed at getting me to even visit their site, considering I'm watching the ad on the internet already and it would be 1 click away from going there.

Cool Movie Trailers:
Jumper: This is a movie that has some serious potential in my eyes. Let's look at the math here: 'Cool Night Crawler-esque teleporting special effects' + Samuel L. Jackson as the bad guy = SOLD.
Wanted: I don't get excited about action movies easily. With this said: Wanted excites me. Okay that wasn't as climatic as I had imagined. Anyway, this movie looks very much like Equilibrium, which is Cool Beans to me . And don't forget the addition of Angelina Jolie. Don't get me wrong here, I don't enjoy watching her in action sequences, her sole purpose in this film is exclusively T&A. Okay, I'm glad we got that straight.

Notable Mentions:
Under Armor: Cool effects, Nike feel to it.
Foxbot Vs. Terminator: I'm not gonna link it cause it's so short that it's not even worth it. All I have to say is that it's always fun to watch an animated fight scene, but I don't know who Foxbot is nor do I care. Who knows, maybe it hit it off better with the American crowd.
Cars.com #1 , #2: Nice attempt by the company to be out of the box and funny. Made me chuckle a bit, but I don't think a whole commercial can be saved by one single gimmick.
SoBe Life Water: You can tell they put a lot of time and money into animating the entire dance sequence. Although it's not overly amusing, it's just one of those things that you can stare blankly at because you know it cost a lot of money. Ooooh shiny...
