Love Monkey

Most of you have probably seen this show but didn't know it was called Love Monkey. It airs on MuchMoreMusic every so often and it stars Tom Cavanagh (the guy from 'Ed'). The basic premise has nothing to do with loving monkeys or monkey love, rather it follows an 'A&R Music Rep' (also known as the manager for the band) as he tries to scout new talent and all that jazz.

After I found myself watching this show every time it was on MuchMore, I decided to download the series. To my disappointment however, I found out that CBS pulled the plug on the show after 8 Episodes. I just finished watching the whole series, and I've gotta say that I'm really disappointed that they didn't even get to finish a full season. It was one of those shows that had a gang of really loveable characters, strong actors (with some big names like Tom Cavanagh, Judy Frier [Kitty from Arrested Development], and Jason Priestley), and a feel good theme. The writing is very witty and fresh, and I would compare it to Gilmore Girls except without the excessive/unrealistic dialogue speed. The show also played a very interesting angle and look into the music business and the process in which noname bands get signed. Some instant benefits that the series got from being based around the music industry were some high profile cameos (ie: John Mellencamp, Ben Folds Five, Ted Geiger, Lisa Loeb, Natasha Beddingfield, etc). Also I can't emphasize how great the soundtrack for the series is.

I've gotta say after watching it, I'm a big fan of Tom Cavanagh's. With all the subtle looks, grins, and charm that he puts into his character on TV, it really sets him apart from any other actor. If you've ever seen him in any of his other performances, such as JD's big brother in Scrubs, you can tell that only he can fill those roles the way he does it.

All in all, I'm really sad that Love Monkey was cancelled like other great series before it: Family Guy, Arrested Development, Drawn Together, etc. I hope that it can bounce back like how Family Guy did, but until then I'd recommend downloading the series and watching it for yourselves. Of course now, it will most likely be disappointing because of all the hype I made for it.
