The Non-Renewable World

Often times when you hear the word non-renewable, you immediately think fossil fuels and all the resources in the world that we'll never get back after they're used. This association to resources is justified, seeing as there's such a big concern involving the allocation of those resources.

But, with this in mind, we also have to be careful at the same time not to materialize everything in the world. With so many worldly matters revolving around oil, wealth, and the bought things in life, I think we often neglect to think about those intangible things that can also be non-renewable in our pursuit of the material world. Just two weeks ago, I had the chance to attend a baptism service held at my church on a Sunday morning. Before being baptised, this Jr High girl was able to share her testimony about her life. It included the usual about arguing with parents, siblings and the such. But it also included the fact that a majority of her friends from school were into drug use and sex. Now, keeping in mind that this is the mind of a Christian raised girl, I do realize that there could be some exaggeration in her opinion of her school friends. Even with that in mind, it completely shocked me that drugs has made its way into Jr Highs.

I remember when I was going to Mary Butterworth, one of the last things on my mind were drugs. Even if the story could have been different for any of my classmates, I can tell for sure that it wouldn't have gone so far as a drug addiction. It amazes me everytime I hear of more stories about kids those age doing the things that they do. I remember going to the playground a number of years ago, and seeing a boy who couldn't have been older than 7 Yrs old, talking about doing some sexual things to another girl across the playground.

It's not that the whole thing makes me bitter towards little kid. Actually, a big part of me feels sorry for those kids who don't get the chance to enjoy their childhood before their innocence is taken away. I couldn't imagine being a kid and not being able to do those simple kid things that they're supposed to do. I believe it's the non-renewable innocence of children that needs to be as closely guarded as our non-renewable resources.
