What's your definition of 'satisfied'?
So I've been watching lots of seasons of TV shows that I've been downloading. I think I've blogged about this before, but I think it's something that's so strange to me that it's worth mentioning again..
What I find extremely cool about today's world is that everyone is interconnected like never before. What am I talking about? Well I'm referring to the many ways that you could communicate or talk to that person half way across the world just by simply clicking one button and typing out your message. Okay so it's been like this for more than 10 yrs or so now, but I want you to think about it in a different way.
What's different about today's world is just the sheer popularity of the internet pop culture phenomenon. Not only is it used by billions of people, but also know that celebrities and sports athletes are starting to tune themselves into the entire communication web. I was just catching up on some season 2 of the Office, when I decided to check out their website on NBC.com. Not only did I find an episode guide as to figure out which episode they're on, but I've also found that several of the cast members have made up their own web blogs to journal about their experiences with showbiz and the series.
Now at first this wasn't a huge surprise to me. I figured, well it's good to have a blog up for celebrities so that they can pretend to touch base with their fans and all when really the agent really hires some guy to make the website and to write up some kind of general blog for the celebrity. I mean it totally makes sense in a business point of view to get to know and connect with your audience. And also there are those people that love to pretend to be the real celebrity when really it's some pasty guy in Oklahoma with nothing better to do. Gotta love those...
But after some more digging, I was able to find a myspace page that was legitimately run by the actress who plays Pam Beesley in the Office series, Jenna Fischer. Now why was I so interested in such a thing? Several reasons:
1) I think Jenna Fischer is really cute..
2) I wanted to see if celebrities actually had genuine websites/blogs about themselves in which they can connect to their fans.
3) It really is interesting to hear about the regular day life of someone famous.
I don't know if anyone else has felt this way, maybe it's just me and being starstruck. But I always found myself amazed of the thought that while I may be doing something in my life (ie: staying up late for homework, reading a book, taking a shower), that every single famous person out there lives at least some kind of a regular life as well. Have you ever stopped to think that, "Hmm it's 5 AM and I can't get to sleep. I bet you Steve Carrell is in his bed fast asleep." When I finally realized that celebrities of the such also did regular things and had the same basic needs as us (needing to pee, eating food, showering, sleeping), it totally amazed and blindsided me. To think that if I were in the right place at the right time, I could be less than 1 km away from a huge celebrity who was doing just some ordinary task.
I guess in my head, I had built these performers up to a different non-human level to think that they never had the time to sleep, eat, shower or anything like that and that they were in a totally different world than I was. Think about it! Right now as I'm writing this blog, Kiefer Sutherland is probably in his bed getting some sleep or in his kitchen enjoying a late night drink. That's nuts to me.... Now take this dimension, and think that some of them actually take the time to post regular blogs about themselves for everyone to see. And also bump it up one more level to realize that, we can actually send them a message or email (1 of thousands I'm sure), and depending on the circumstances, they may actually read what I have to say in a message and actually take it to heart or have it effect them. Now if you want to get REALLY ambitious, they could even possibly send you back a message of some sort acknowledging your message and perhaps even discuss or reply about something. To me, that's just wow.....
Me speaking to Jenna Fischer? I mean if the circumstances are right, I could pick the brain of many performers I see on TV and find out how they started to do what they do today. That thought just rocks my world...... and leads me to thinking how much more ordinary these people are. And if ordinary people can do something so great like win emmy's and the such, then is it really fair to limit ourselves and to not dream of doing something that big in our future?
This leads me back to the lesson of this entire experience, you really do need to dream big. I'm sure these same people had individuals they looked up to and admired as well, but they didn't let that hinder their dreams. To give an example, I hear all the time that Chris looks like Jet Li. Everyone says that! Have you seen Fearless? I'm sure that almost every asian guy out there wants to be like Jet Li after watching that movie. But, I mean what's stopping Chris from becoming the next Jet Li? I really think it's a mental block that many of us put on ourselves. As for me, I know I'm feeling motivated to achieve greatness rather than achieving acceptable standards.
