Klondike Days VS. Capital Exhibition: The Clash for Supreme Rule over Summer...
I've been reading lots of different arguments about this year's change from the former K-days glory days to the new fangled Capital Ex era. Of course, I don't read much, so when I say I've been reading lots about it, I mean that I read the title of the article and got bored with it. With the collaboration of insightful thoughts and information that I've gathered through this hard studying, I've come to my own basis of opinion on the issue. And here it is..
K-days:
Advantages
- The name rolls of the tip of your tongue, and it's an old favorite term that everyone's gotten used to. You also know what the abbreviation stands for in this case, where as Capital Ex I had to actually look on their page to make sure it stood for Exhibition. I know it sounds dumb, but hey it could have stood for Exhibit or Experience for all I knew....
- They had an actual mascot, or at least I believe they did. If anyone asked me who their mascot was, I'd have to say it was the Klondike Miner. And of course my second guess would be the scary clown faced guy that's the logo for "Conklin Fairs." You all know who I'm talking about, the one with the top hat, scary lips and eyes.
- The Zipper. Back in the days of K-days, I remember going on the Zipper ride and having the best time on it. Why they got rid of it is a huge mystery to me...
- Stuffed Animals you actually want to win. Yeah I know it's crazy to think, but back in a time far far away, there used to be COOL stuffed animals that you actually wanted to keep. And sadly now, the only things you can choose between is an ugly and cheap Stewie or Bryan stuffed teddy bear, or a cheaply made basketball. Yipeee.......... Oh yeah and don't forget the 'Annoying Thing' from those Crazy Frog music videos. Yeah cause every kid wants an ugly looking biker frog with his wee wee hanging out. Kudos to the marketing team....
- The old time memories. Nothing beats the memories that every grown-up has about K-days and what made it truly special to them as kids. For me it'd be the actually YTV personalities coming by and visiting (none of this 'Weird on Wheels' BS), and also the video game exhibits and tournaments.
Capital Ex:
Advantages
- Ed fest. For the older crowd, nothing is cooler than having the chance to watch huge musical acts come to Edmonton, and being able to get tickets for these events at dirt cheap prices. Seriously, OLP tickets for 35 bucks? SOLD!!
- Better fireworks. K-days was notorious for one of the crappiest firework shows ever. On the one night that I was able to catch the fireworks, it was quite the impressive show. Great job to those invovled.
- No more ugly Conklin face. I must say, it's a relief to not see that stupid face logo everywhere I go now. It just left me unsettled everytime I saw it..
- More Margarita Huts. I don't know if it's just me, but I think those margarita drinks from the hut are the only drinks worth paying for while you're down there. Luckily they caught on to this idea and they made more of the huts. Good job!
- Kid's area separate from the rest of the fair. I know Ryan would appreciate this one, seeing as how he hates all kids and everything else young related. But I must say it is nice not having kids EVERYWHERE around you spilling their ice cream on you and whining while daddy spends all the family's money on gambling in the midway.
- Great musical acts you can watch for FREE at Telus stage. I really enjoyed the fact that they didn't decide to COMPLETELY screw everyone out of money and actually had worth-while acts playing on the free stage. No more 7 hypnotist shows in a row, thank you very much.
Now that the line is drawn, which one will you choose? Personally although it's tough to say, I'd have to say that I enjoyed the Capital Ex experience over the K-days days. This is mainly due to the great Philosopher Kings show I was able to catch, coupled with the impressive fireworks display, and the more adult-friendly experience overall. Also I still think it's funny that we can call it C-Ex legitimately. "I'm gonna go pay for C-Ex tonight with all my friends.... I can't wait to get in!" "I have a two for one for C-Ex tonight!"
If I missed anything, or you have a different opinion, let me know.

C-ex... hehe...
Ed Fest is pretty cool, and next year maybe we should just goto that and ignore the rest. It hasn't been anything spectacular for a while...
Good design!
