Is it in you?

You're probably wondering what I'm referring to in the title. I would think of some smart-assed way to present a better thesis, but that would take way too much thinking and work. So instead I'll just plainly come out and say it: I'm referring to the motivation to do well in school.

Continuing on with the school psychobabble theme from my last blog because it seems to be the common denominator in everyone's life, I've just come to ponder how and why people are motivated to do so well in school? I'm not saying that it's a bad thing at all, but every so often it is interesting to take a look at what makes people tick, or in this case, stress out about school.

The reason why I ask this question is because I've been seeming to lack in this area as of late. To me personally, there is no real motivation to do extremely well in a course unless you're shooting for a specific scholarship or you're in your graduating year. To me, it just seems that in reality, students only need the bare minimum they require to pass the course and have a high enough mark to move onto the next level of the course. From the best of my knowledge, jobs don't tend to look at any marks except for the graduate year marks when determining jobs. I mean, of course you're gonna work hard if you're trying to transfer to a higher end school with your GPA. But in my personal situation, it seems like I've already chosen my path, and really all I need is a high enough GPA to go onto the next year.

Am I being too simpleminded about the subject? I'd like to hear everyone's input into what drives them to get the higher grades in their courses.

I think a lot of people try to get high grades because they actually do matter more in some faculties than others. In Engineering Co-op, for instance, my transcript goes out with every resume I send to an employer or I don't get considered for the job. Come to think of it, my GPA is displayed right on the resume. That's not to mention the push for grades in first year so that I could get into the stream I wanted and also get into co-op.
A lot of people push for the 'First Class Standing' of 3.5, which is put on your diploma if your GPA over the last five semesters of your degree is 3.5.
Also, talking to one of the guys on the wrestling team, people trying to get into Med and Dent actually need to have A to A+ averages to get in, since the spots are so limited.
So I guess most people do it out of necessity, some do it because their parents will whip them with coat hangers if they fail, and there are some (mythological) people who try to succeed in school because they actually want to know as much as they can for their future job.

hey dev! hope things are goin well for u... are u still working at futureshop? i've browsed there a couple of times after my work out sessions, but i don't seem to run into u... school and work(x2) had been so crazy lately. 7 week long courses isn't easy either.. it'll be MT this month.. final next month.. (tmrw actually.. sheit..lol).. then MT again and a final.. it's a vicious cycle!! field placement's are starting in january for me.. so excited yet so scared!! i get to go to long term care facilities and bath old ppl... (o.o)... *eck*

^__^ since u say that u also lack in comments for your blog... this comment is gonna be extra long...lol

a nurses' motivation to do well in school... hmm... well, since it's not curved at GMCC, what a student gets is what they've worked for(not influnced by the stoopid curve ^__^). my tutor said a very good statement this one day... "It's true that all it takes is a C to pass... but think, if u were a patient.. would u prefer a C-grade nurse or an A-grade nurse?" that kinda put it into perspective for me to work hard for my best grade possible to my potential. Nursing deals with ppl's health and stuff, working hard to earn the education is a must.. besides... i really do need a good GPA for my transfer to UofA later on in my program...=)

I guess for me I'm trying to get as high of a mark that I can, because the higher my mark is the more i understand what I'm doing later on the job and dont fuck up.
AND
if I screw up REALLY bad: people die, I lose my job, become infamous for being that 'guy' who screwed up, go back to school because no one in that field will hire me ever again. Well maybe thats just what school's been telling me about screwing up. And I think I go to jail for getting people killed.

For me its about hopefully finding my interest. Then I want to be pretty darn decent at it.

I also think in addition to finding your interest, hard work is always around the corner. It doesn't take a lot of work to do the bare minimum, but then again what exactly are you going to get for those kind of efforts and results?

With some luck everyone can find where they best fit and grow from there.
