Valentine's Day bitching is in the air...
Ahh Valentine's Day, possibly one of the most controversial holiday of the year. It is a day to appreciate the special bond you have with that significant other. It's the one day when all couples can put away their differences and troubles of the relationship, and just be thankful for one another. Really when it comes down to it, it's the Rememberance Day of relationships, where you try not to take for granted for what you've worked so hard for with that special someone.
Well, at least that's one side of the coin. The other side to the story claims it as a 'commercial whore' where countless amounts of money are spent on gifts and apparently doesn't show the true love b/w two ppl. It's that time where couples become broke from buying useless gifts for one another, or when a conflict occurs for the lack there of gifts or special plans made for one another. It's the "corporate scheme" that's apparently responsible for making high profile companies such as Hallmark or People's Jewellers as wealthy as they are today.
The battle between the two views of the holiday has originated since the civilization of man. Countless debates and informal arguments occur yearly during this time of year about who's right and who's wrong. And I could go on and on about the pros and cons about each argument.
But the fact of the matter is, Valentine's day is meant for the celebration of love. Whether that be from the materialistic side of things or the sentimental side, it all boils down to the same thing. Really, when you look at all of the school newspapers babbling on and on about how it's such a false occasion and should be abolished forever, the main reason why they take such a harsh stance against it is because of a number of reasons:
1) They don't have a boyfriend or girlfriend for V-day, and they are incredibly bitter about that fact. ("I don't care if I'm alone! Valentine's Day is a materialistic holiday that I never wanted to celebrate anyway! *sob sob*")
2) They're incredible poor or stingy with money.
3) All of the above.
The fact of the matter is, when you do have the Valentine, the money, and the foresight to plan an extra special occasion for him/her, it's a bittersweet moment. It's really easy to say that you'd never want to experience that anyway, but when you do get the chance to, the experience is surreal. And I think the main element that makes it so special is not the fact that you spent a whole lot of money, or that you made a huge elaborate plan, but the fact that you get that yearly chance to make that someone feel like the luckiest person in the world, just from the amount of attention you can give them. It may sound cliche, but the smile on their face is truly the best reward of all. Money is not even a requirement, but to just let the person know how much you care about them with no strings attached, that's truly special.
So for all of those ppl who make it a yearly habit to bitch and whine about Valentine's Day and try to ruin everyone else's plans, just shut the &#@% up. You can't really judge the significance of V-Day until you've had the chance to have that special someone of your own, and experience the holiday. Besides, I think it's the one day that couples should be given to themselves away from 3rd wheels, away from nosey friends, and away from whiners.
But to everyone else, Happy Valentine's Day! I hope you guys had a chance to make it a truly special one.
