As many of you have probably heard by now, the remains of a little girl that was once kidnapped 5 months ago from a Toronto househould was found. Although it's a heartbreaking story, and my prayers are with the family of Cecilia Zhang, I'm not gonna take this blog to review about the facts of the story or anything, but to kind of gain a new perspective on the issues at hand.

The main question about the tragedy is why the culprits would commit such a crime. Well from a criminological point of view, one could make many reasons. But when it comes down to it, none of them seem to check out:

Money: no, because the family offered a 200,000 dollar reward for just cecilia's safe returning. The criminal was not asked to turn themselves in or anything. Even if their safety would have played a factor on why they decided not to take the reward, no ransom demands were issued either.

Fame: that doesn't check out either because no effort was put into trying to make their names infamous, as no clue whatsoever was given to lead to their infamy.

The main reason that I could think of as a possibility is mental illness in particular psychopathy. In some research that we were conducting in class, it's been proven time and time again that the condition of psychopathy can result in someone committing crimes that they down right are unable to feel the sympathy of. It's been seen that some psychopaths are just not able to feel sympathy after an act is committed mainly due to their psychological circumstances.

Of course there's always the other speculations of what could have happened like the kidnappers finding themselves in the wrong house or anything like that. And there is always the possibility that Cecilia could have not been kidnapped at all, in that she got out of the house under her own will for whatever reason.

Although we'll never have all the answers, what is known is that this case is indeed a tragedy that has touched the hearts of all Canadians. It kinda hits home for some families as in the past it was unheard of for such an occurance to happen to an asian family. It's always been thought that asian families worked hard, kept their noses clean, and didn't make any enemies. It's truly a wake-up call for all Canadians about how precious the children around us really are.

As for the Zhang family, I can't help but feel remorse. They will be in my prayers for the next few weeks, and I really do wish them luck on recovering from their deep loss. What more could they really have done? They tried their hardest to speak to the kidnappers but to no avail. They even went as far as mortgaging their house to raise enough money for an attractive reward for the kidnappers. I can't imagine the pain and suffering they are going through right now, and I can't help from feeling touched by such a story...
